Upon entering Graves's place I was greeted well with Graves's place. Really no shocks there. Nothing was unpacked, random shit was in random places and the place seemed to fit what i would expect to get in Brooklyn. Actually that is what I though when I saw it, but turns out his bedroom was huge and so the place was actually way bigger than I would have expected for NYC. Especially since it was probably bigger and barely more expensive than his Seattle place. Of course there were things that didn't work, but still impressive. Who really needs cold water besides me anyways.
Graves and I hung out in Brooklyn for the afternoon. We went to a brewery where his friend works down the road. The fabled Brooklyn Brewery had been talked about so much I expected some really fancy microbrew. The atmosphere was probably more college kegger than anything, but fairly cool nonetheless. Afterwards we met up with CC in Hipsterville which was only a couple blocks from Graves place. This made me like his place all the more since I tend to like places hipsters like. It was weird though because there was a surprising lack of PBR for as many hipsters as there were.
The hipster olypmics were actually shot in the park by his place.
The next day Tim showed up and we went to CC's. He has just moved there and his place was still getting brought up to Chris standards, but it was still really nice. He lives in Chelsea so it is expected to be quite expensive. It is actually pretty close to IAC headquarters where Diller spent all my money on a fancy Frank Gehry headquarters. Technically it is probably one of the cooler things he has done taking into account that I don't really like many things he has done. I kind of wanted to see it, but figured Diller might see me doing something bad out his office window and decided against it. That day we basically spent putzing around Manhattan taking advantage of places that served beer on a Sunday.
The next couple days were filled with the occasional stroll and then bar hopping at night. We went to Tim's favorite bar, Barcade, but I was not that impressed. I guess I had unreasonable expectations. The place was fairly empty and drinks were high brow. I expected Shorty's I guess. Also we went to the Yankee's game, but I am saving that for another blog entry.
Overall the trip was great. I was glad I got to see these guys again and really happy I got to experience a different part of NYC. I don't know if I would ever want to live in Manhattan, but where Graves lived in Brooklyn was pretty great. It was close to Hipsterville and very easy to get into the city from there. The trip was also good because I got to see what it was like for other who live in a really expensive city. I am trying to find what a comfortable amount to spend on a home is and it was certainly good for that.
Random Notes
There is a bar on the lower east side call "Meet the Johnson's" which basically is a craphole with lots of furniture I remember from my childhood. I am pretty sure the Wettschurack's (I think it was them that had the wood furniture with cushions, might have been the Mussers) old living room set was here. So was the fake wood paneling, stylized mirror glass squares and Tim's old chair from the JNo. It had PBR and it was cheap. All this made the bar awesome. It also had a real jukebox. This is so hard to find anymore. What is wrong with you society?
I still haven't been up in the empire state building, but now I have been up Rockefellar Center. That is probably a better view because it looks out into the park as well as midtown. Cost twenty bucks which kind of sucks, but hey I got to go up in tall things right.
Don't feel left out Empire State Building.
The BOA in Grave's building smells like bacon so don't get cash from there before going to eat. I asked the guy about it and I guess they are above a BBQ and this explains things. He said he doesn't really notice the smell any more. I asked him if he goes home smelling like bacon, but he said no. However I bet a lot of people start drooling when he gets on the subway. Mmm.... bacon...
Near Graves is a bar called the Turkey's Nest (it is in the background of the video) and it is basically a 7-11 that will put alcohol in your drink for takeout. You can see it in the background during the Hipster Olympics. Seriously you could get a 32oz. styrofoam cup of anything and it was cheap. We mostly had Coors Light and Margarita smoothies. They also had Big Buck Hunter Safari which is by far the best Big Buck Hunter ever. I shot a giraffe in the neck.
The title is a reference to Justin's sweatshirt and his half-assed attempt to take off the lettering. At one point he was trying to do this with a knife or something before I introduced him to a seam ripper. As you can see it made him way more efficient. And yes Justin I know you used your full ass.
